Stanford Cardinal men’s gymnastics and women’s swimming and diving programs have each extended their streaks of NCAA championships to five consecutive titles, according to the university’s official athletics website. The men’s gymnastics team won its fifth straight national title in 2024, while the women’s swimming and diving squad secured its fifth consecutive championship from 1992 to 1996. These runs represent some of the longest sustained dominance in NCAA history across all sports.

The men’s gymnastics program’s five-peat from 2019 to 2024 places it among the most successful dynasties in collegiate athletics. Stanford captured team titles in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, though the 2020 championship was awarded after the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Stanford recognized as champions based on regular-season performance and conference standings. The Cardinal have now won 10 NCAA men’s gymnastics titles in program history, the most of any school.

On the women’s side, Stanford’s swimming and diving team achieved five straight NCAA championships from 1992 through 1996, a period of unprecedented dominance in the sport. During that span, the Cardinal consistently outperformed rivals such as Florida, Texas, and Auburn, setting multiple NCAA and American records. The program has since added additional titles, bringing its total to nine NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships.

These streaks are highlighted in a feature published by Stanford Athletics titled “50 Straight Years Of NCAA Champions,” which notes that Stanford has won at least one NCAA team championship in every academic year since 1976–77. The men’s gymnastics and women’s swimming and diving programs are two of the cornerstones of this legacy, contributing significantly to the university’s leading position in the NCAA Directors’ Cup standings, which Stanford has won 28 times in the last 31 years.

The men’s gymnastics team’s success has been driven by consistent recruiting, elite coaching, and a deep talent pool. Head coach Thom Glielmi, who has led the program since 2004, has overseen all five recent titles. Under his guidance, Stanford has produced numerous individual national champions and Olympic team members, including Yul Moldauer, who won the all-around bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and was a key contributor to the Cardinal’s 2021 and 2022 team titles.

Similarly, the women’s swimming and diving dynasty of the 1990s was led by head coach Ted Wingard, who coached the team from 1988 to 2006. Wingard’s squads during the five-year championship run featured Olympic medalists such as Jenny Thompson, who won eight Olympic medals over her career, including five golds, and Dara Torres, who earned 12 Olympic medals across five Games. The team’s depth and versatility across strokes and diving events allowed it to prevail in tightly contested championships.

While the women’s swimming and diving team has not matched its 1990s streak in recent years, it remains a national contender, regularly finishing in the top five at the NCAA Championships. The men’s gymnastics team, meanwhile, enters the 2025 season as the defending champion and favorite to extend its streak to six consecutive titles, a feat never before achieved in the sport’s NCAA history.

Stanford’s athletic department emphasizes that these accomplishments are the result of institutional commitment to Olympic sports, world-class facilities, and a culture that prioritizes both athletic and academic excellence. The university continues to be a leader in producing athletes who compete at the highest levels of international competition while maintaining rigorous academic standards.
