Russian forces launched a mass missile and drone strike across major Ukrainian cities on April 16, 2026, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens. The overnight assault targeted residential neighborhoods in Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, marking one of the deadliest attacks on Ukrainian civilians in 2026.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia deployed a total of 659 drones, 25 cruise missiles, and 19 ballistic missiles during the operation. According to military reports, 20 drones and 12 missiles struck 26 separate locations across the country, while debris from intercepted munitions hit an additional 25 locations.

Casualties and Damage in Kyiv

In the capital city of Kyiv, the strikes killed four people, including a 12-year-old boy. Between 45 and 48 residents were reported injured, with 26 individuals hospitalized. Among the wounded were children and four emergency medical workers.

The damage was concentrated in the Shevchenkivskyi, Obolonskyi, and Podilskyi districts. In the Podilskyi district, missile debris struck the sixth floor of a 16-story building, and rescuers pulled a mother and child from the ruins of a collapsed residential structure. In the Obolonskyi district, a large fire broke out in a non-residential area where missile debris fell, destroying several cars. A drone struck an 18-story building on the morning of April 16, 2026.

Impact on Odesa, Dnipro, and Kharkiv

The southern port city of Odesa suffered significant losses, with reports indicating between six and eight deaths resulting from the missile and drone strikes.

In the central-eastern city of Dnipro, the attack killed between two and three people. Local authorities reported that a five-story building was damaged, resulting in multiple fires and numerous injuries.

In Kharkiv, a drone strike injured two people, identified as a 66-year-old man and a 77-year-old woman. Several fires were reported across the city following the strikes.

Air Defense Deficits and Diplomatic Reactions

The mass attack occurred shortly after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted a critical shortage of air defense capabilities. In an interview published on April 4, 2026, Zelenskyy warned that the deficit of U.S.-made Patriot missiles, which are essential for intercepting ballistic missiles, had reached a critical level.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha addressed the strikes, stating: Such attacks cannot be normalised. These are war crimes that must be stopped and their perpetrators held to account.

The escalation followed a brief ceasefire observed during Orthodox Easter celebrations over the preceding weekend, a period during which both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of hundreds of violations.

Reports from Russian Territory

Simultaneously, Russian officials reported casualties within their own borders. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev stated on Telegram that a Ukrainian drone attack in the Krasnodar Krai region killed two children, aged five, and 14.
