Light rain is forecast for parts of South Korea beginning late Thursday afternoon and continuing through Friday morning, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Despite the anticipated showers, Children’s Day on Tuesday is expected to be clear and warm nationwide.
The KMA reported that rainfall amounts will vary across the country. Jeju’s mountainous regions may receive up to 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) of rain, while southern North Chungcheong, eastern North Jeolla, and eastern South Jeolla provinces are expected to see around 5 millimeters. Busan, Ulsan, South Gyeongsang, Daegu, and North Gyeongsang provinces could experience 5 to 10 millimeters of rainfall, and Ulleungdo and Dokdo islands may receive 10 to 30 millimeters.
The precipitation is attributed to a “saddle point,” or col, weather phenomenon. This occurs when a low-pressure and a high-pressure system cross diagonally, creating a gentle pressure trough. According to a KMA forecaster, this type of system produces weaker updrafts and lighter rainfall compared to a typical pressure trough.
“High and low-pressure systems are currently moving smoothly from west to east around the Korean Peninsula, causing the weather to shift in various ways,”
a forecaster at the KMA said Thursday.
Skies are expected to clear from the west throughout the afternoon on Friday. Rain is also predicted to fall nationwide on Sunday, though for different meteorological reasons than the Friday showers.
