Michael Jackson Biopic Hits Theaters April 22

The Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” is set to premiere in theaters on April 22, 2026, with early reactions now emerging from critics and industry observers.

The film, which chronicles the life and legacy of the King of Pop from his early days with the Jackson Five through his rise as a solo superstar, stars Jaafar Jackson in the titular role of his uncle Michael Jackson. The biopic also features an ensemble cast including Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, “Michael” had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on April 10, 2026, followed by a scheduled United States release on April 24, 2026. The film is distributed domestically by Lionsgate Films and internationally by Universal Pictures.

With a reported runtime of 127 minutes (2 hours and 7 minutes), the PG-13 rated musical biographical drama carries a production budget estimated between $155 million and $200 million. Development on the project began in November 2019 after producer Graham King secured the rights to create a film about Michael Jackson’s life.

Principal photography commenced in January 2024 following delays caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and concluded in May 2024, with additional photography taking place in June 2025. Visual effects were provided by several houses including Industrial Light & Magic.

The Hollywood Reporter’s early reactions piece notes that the film aims to portray Michael Jackson’s life beyond his music, highlighting both his personal journey and iconic performances from his early solo career to give audiences “a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before.”

As of April 21, 2026, advance ticket sales are available through platforms such as Fandango and Cinemark, with some theaters offering special promotions including FanClub rewards and gift card discounts for the highly anticipated biopic.
