DETROIT – The rivalry between the Michigan and Michigan State hockey programs delivered another classic on Saturday, February 7th, but this chapter belonged decisively to the Spartans. Just one day removed from a thrilling overtime loss to their in-state rivals at Yost Ice Arena, Michigan State responded with a dominant 5-2 victory over top-ranked Michigan in the “Duel in the D” at Little Caesars Arena.

The win not only secured a third consecutive “Iron D” trophy for MSU but also propelled them into first place in the Big Ten standings, holding a one-point advantage over the Wolverines with six conference games remaining. Michigan State coach Adam Nightingale emphasized the team’s response to Friday’s setback. “I thought the crowd was awesome, and to see it full with that kind of excitement, it was great,” he said. “I loved our execution at the start, and you know, after yesterday’s game, we needed to be way better. We had a tough meeting with our guys, and we made a commitment to hold them accountable. We needed to be better, and that was a big-time response from our guys tonight.”

The Spartans wasted no time establishing control, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before the midpoint of the game. Gavin O’Connell opened the scoring, capitalizing on space created after jumping onto the ice during a line change, receiving a pass from Anthony Romani and beating Michigan goaltender Jack Ivankovic. Porter Martone extended the lead with a well-placed shot from the left circle, notching his 16th goal of the season on the power play. Martone spoke about adjusting to the college game. “Coming to college, it’s a lot different and a lot harder, playing with a faster pace,” he said. “I think a big thing for me is to focus on what I need to do and just become that. I’m finding my identity as a player who plays in front of the goalie’s eyes and really working below the hash marks. It’s something I continue to work on every day and just trying to get better at it.”

Michigan State continued to pour on the offense in the second period. Maxim Strbak delivered a pinpoint pass to Charlie Stramel, who finished with a back-door goal, increasing the lead to 3-0. Just over a minute later, Tommi Mannisto set up Tiernan Shoudy for another Spartan goal, extending the advantage to four. The Wolverines finally answered late in the second period, with Jayden Perron, who had scored the overtime winner for Michigan the previous night, backhanding a rebound past MSU goaltender Trey Augustine.

Early in the third period, Nick Moldenhauer brought Michigan within two, but the Spartans quelled any comeback hopes. Mannisto sealed the victory with an empty-net goal late in the game, racing down the ice to deposit the puck into the unguarded net.

Augustine was crucial in preserving the lead, stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced. Ivankovic, returning from a five-game absence due to injury, made 31 saves for Michigan. The Spartans’ balanced attack saw 12 different players register at least one point.

The victory marks the third consecutive year Michigan State has lifted the Iron D trophy, symbolizing their dominance in the in-state rivalry. The Spartans’ performance was a clear statement after Friday’s narrow defeat, demonstrating their resilience and ability to respond to adversity.

Looking ahead, Michigan State will enjoy an off week before hosting Notre Dame on February 20th and 21st in their final home series of the regular season. With a one-point lead in the Big Ten standings, the Spartans control their own destiny as they pursue a third consecutive conference championship.
