Microsoft Names New Security EVP & Shifts Engineering Focus to Quality

Microsoft is restructuring its security and engineering divisions, bringing back Hayete Gallot to lead security and shifting Charlie Bell to a new role focused on engineering quality. The changes, announced by CEO Satya Nadella on February 4, 2026, reflect the company’s continued prioritization of these areas, particularly as the threat landscape evolves and generative AI introduces new challenges.

Hayete Gallot Returns to Lead Microsoft Security

Hayete Gallot rejoins Microsoft as Executive Vice President, Security, reporting directly to Nadella. She previously held roles at Microsoft for over 15 years, contributing to the development of key franchises like Windows and Office, and was instrumental in the design and implementation of the company’s Security Solution Area. Most recently, Gallot served as President, Customer Experience for Google Cloud. Her return is seen as a strategic move to bolster Microsoft’s security efforts, building on recent momentum including progress with Security Copilot agents and strong adoption of Purview.

Nadella emphasized Gallot’s ability to combine product development with delivering value to customers as a key reason for her appointment. All of Microsoft’s security teams will now report to Gallot, and Ales Holecek will take on the new role of Chief Architect for Security, also reporting to her. Holecek brings experience in architecture and development across Microsoft’s platforms, aiming to integrate security more deeply with existing businesses and the Agent Platform.

Charlie Bell Shifts Focus to Engineering Quality

After leading Microsoft’s security efforts for over four years, Charlie Bell is transitioning to a new role focused on engineering quality as an individual contributor (IC) engineer. This move, which Nadella stated had been planned for some time, reflects Bell’s desire to return to a more hands-on engineering role. Bell previously spent 23 years at Amazon Web Services, where he held a key management position.

Nadella highlighted Bell’s previous success in building the Security, Compliance, Identity, and Management organization and rallying the company around the Secure Future Initiative. In his new role, Bell will partner closely with Scott Guthrie and Mala Anand to improve engineering objectives and deliver durable, high-quality experiences at a global scale. The shift comes as Microsoft focuses on the Quality Excellence Initiative, increasing accountability and accelerating progress in engineering.

The restructuring occurs amid broader concerns about the impact of generative AI on the growth of established software companies. Microsoft announced changes to its sales organization on February 4, 2026, promoting four sales executives to Executive Vice Presidents in an effort to better serve clients and capitalize on AI opportunities.
