Microsoft is phasing out the Outlook Lite app for Android users, a move that will significantly restrict the application’s utility within the next six weeks.

According to reporting from Forbes and Neowin on April 13, 2026, the company has set a deadline for next month after which the functionality of the Lite version will be severely curtailed.

While the Outlook Lite app will technically remain open after the deadline, mailbox access will be disabled. In-app navigation and general functionality will cease to work.

Context of the Android Ecosystem

This shutdown occurs amidst a broader effort by Microsoft to unify the Outlook experience across various platforms. However, this transition has not been without technical friction for mobile users.

Reports from Microsoft Q&A indicate that the shift toward a new Outlook architectural experience has led to compatibility and performance issues on mobile devices. These problems are particularly noted among Android users, with Samsung device owners reporting significant disruptions.

Users have reported a variety of failures in the 2024-2025 mobile app versions, including:

  • Broken attachment handling for PDF, PNG, Word, Excel, and Wave files.
  • Failure of search functions.
  • Incomplete folder synchronization.
  • The inability to report spam or phishing.
  • Issues with blocking emails.

These issues are attributed to major architectural adjustments intended to create a unified experience, which instead resulted in performance degradation on several Android handsets.

Ongoing Maintenance and Updates

Despite the shutdown of the Lite version, Microsoft continues to provide regular updates for the primary Outlook for Android and iOS applications. According to Microsoft Learn, updates are released on a weekly basis to provide security patches, non-security updates, and new features.

Ongoing Maintenance and Updates

The most recent recorded builds for the mobile apps include:

  • Build 5.2610.1, released March 20, 2026, which included various fixes to functionality and performance for both iOS, and Android.
  • Build 5.2607.0, released February 26, 2026, focusing on functionality and performance fixes.
  • Build 5.2606.0, released February 20, 2026, also addressing performance and functionality.

Microsoft notes that features and fixes are often rolled out over a period of time to ensure stability before reaching the wider audience.

Enterprise and Security Implications

Beyond the consumer-facing app changes, Microsoft’s mobile ecosystem is also facing challenges related to enterprise management. Reports from the Petri IT Knowledgebase indicate that a Microsoft Intune security update may block Outlook and Teams.

some enterprise users have reported issues with app configurations failing to work from MDM servers. While some users indicated this was primarily affecting iOS devices starting in late August or early September 2025, it highlights the ongoing complexity of managing Microsoft’s mobile suite across different operating systems.

For Android users currently relying on Outlook Lite, the upcoming deadline means they must transition to the standard Outlook app to maintain access to their mailboxes.
