New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, confirming he has had “difficult conversations” with his family, the organization, coaches, and players following the publication of photos showing him with Dianna Russini, a former NFL reporter for The Athletic.
The photos, published by the New York Post two weeks prior to Vrabel’s statement, depicted the coach and Russini together at an adults-only resort in Arizona. Both Vrabel and Russini, who are married to other individuals, stated the images did not accurately reflect their interaction.
Vrabel chose to speak publicly after initially remaining silent, explaining he wanted to address the matter directly so that Patriots players would not be forced to answer questions about him. He said he had a candid conversation with the team during voluntary workouts on Monday, the day before his media appearance.
“I’ve had some difficult conversations with people I care about — with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players,” Vrabel said. “Those have been positive and productive. We believe in order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions. That includes me. That starts with me.”
He emphasized that the conversations were focused on accountability and maintaining the integrity of the team environment. “We never want our actions to negatively affect the team. We never want to be the cause of a distraction,” Vrabel added.
Vrabel expressed gratitude to local reporters for their patience during his period of silence, describing the situation as a “personal and private matter.” He reiterated his commitment to moving forward, stating, “What I can promise you is that my family, this organization, the team, the staff, the coaches, everybody − our fans, most importantly − will get the best version of me going forward.”
Russini resigned from The Athletic less than a week after the photos were published, following an internal investigation at the outlet. The New York Times-owned sports organization confirmed her departure amid the fallout from the story.
The NFL confirmed it is not investigating Vrabel’s conduct. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told The Associated Press that the league had reviewed the matter and determined no further action was warranted.
A Patriots spokesperson said there are no plans for additional team officials to comment on the issue. Vrabel’s statement marked the first time he addressed the photos publicly since providing a brief comment to the New York Post on April 8, 2026.
