On April 2, 2026, the Moon phase in North America was Waning Gibbous, according to NASA’s Daily Moon Guide.

This phase occurs after a Full Moon has passed, resulting in the Moon appearing smaller each subsequent night. The illumination fades from the right side of the lunar disk until the cycle reaches a New Moon, where the Moon appears completely dark.

Observation of the Moon on April 2, 2026, provided several visible features for those with clear skies. Without the use of visual aids, observers could identify the Mare Tranquillitatis, the Aristarchus Plateau, and the Kepler Crater.

The use of binoculars enabled the spotting of additional lunar features, specifically the Endymion and Posidonius Craters.

For observers utilizing a telescope, the clearest viewing opportunities included the Schiller Crater, the Caucasus Mountains, and the Apollo 11 site.

The Mechanics of Lunar Phases

According to NASA, the Moon takes approximately 29.5 days to complete its orbit around Earth. During this period, it progresses through eight unique phases.

Although the same side of the Moon always faces Earth, the amount of its surface illuminated by the Sun changes as it orbits. This variation causes the Moon to appear fully illuminated, partially lit, or as a thin crescent.

The lunar phases are categorized into eight distinct stages:

  • New Moon: The Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun, meaning the side facing Earth is dark and invisible to the eye.
  • Waxing Crescent: A small sliver of light is visible on the right side for those in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • First Quarter: The right side of the Moon is half-lit.

The next Full Moon is predicted to take place on May 1, 2026, which will be the first of two full moons occurring in the month of May.
