Simon McQuoid has returned to the director’s chair for Mortal Kombat II, a sequel to his 2021 film that expands the cinematic world of the fighting game franchise. The new installment centers on the struggle to save Earthrealm from the conquests of Shao Kahn, played by Martyn Ford, who has begun his campaign of domination by targeting the realm of Kitana, portrayed by Adeline Rudolph.

A central addition to the cast is Karl Urban, who joins the franchise as the actor-turned-fighter Johnny Cage. According to a review by CBR published May 6, 2026, Urban’s portrayal brings an energy reminiscent of 1980s action cinema, characterized by campy dialogue and a character who is initially unprepared for the brutality of the tournament arenas.

Urban has described the physicality of the role and the genre in an interview with Novinky, stating that martial arts is a beautiful, violent dance.

The film maintains a core group of champions tasked with defending Earthrealm. The roster includes:

  • Jax, played by Mehcad Brooks
  • Liu Kang, played by Ludi Lin
  • Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan
  • Sonya Blade, played by Jessica McNamee

Critical reception of the sequel suggests a film that leans heavily into its source material’s identity. The Hollywood Reporter described the production as a tacky sequel strictly for the fans, while Seznam Zprávy noted the film’s proud embrace of its own lack of subtlety, highlighting the inclusion of oversized weapons like giant hammers and deadly fans.

Despite the perceived tackiness, some critics argue the sequel improves upon the foundation of the first movie. CBR noted that while the 2021 film experienced growing pains, Mortal Kombat II offers fight sequences that are just as gory and exciting as fans would want but provide more depth and heart through increased character development.

The narrative structure mirrors the gameplay of the series by pairing characters in successive battles. This approach is designed to make the audience more invested in the outcomes and the specific fatalities that occur during the tournament.

The inclusion of Johnny Cage is viewed as a pivotal shift in tone for the franchise. CBR suggests that Urban’s performance transforms the movie into something akin to a classic ’80s action film, providing a counterbalance to the grim stakes of Earthrealm’s survival.
