Scam websites impersonating the National Car Testing Service (NCT) booking system have been operating for several months, evolving from charging excessive fees to outright fraud, according to the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

The RSA reported that multiple fake websites mimicked the official NCT booking platform, with one victim losing more than €600 in two separate transactions while others paid between €60 and €89 for non-existent appointments.

Internal RSA records show that after issuing a public warning, a new version of the scam site appeared shortly afterward. One site was successfully shut down following a “suite of complaints,” while a second remained operational but was blocked from scraping vehicle information to prevent it from appearing legitimate.

A spokeswoman for the NCT emphasized that the only official and legitimate website for booking an NCT is www.ncts.ie, warning that fraudulent sites falsely claim to be the official platform and take payments without creating any legitimate booking.

The scam came to light after being publicised in national media, with the RSA stating it had received no further reports from customers who may have been duped following the shutdown of one site.
