The Carabinieri Command for Health Protection (NAS) has conducted a series of food safety interventions in the province of Latina, resulting in the seizure of various products posing significant public health risks, including items at risk of botulism and contamination linked to Hepatitis A.

Among the most critical findings, authorities seized 156 packages of preserves identified as being at risk of botulism. In a separate action, NAS officers blocked 3,000 kilograms of products associated with Hepatitis A. Checks performed for the Easter period led to the seizure of 250 kilograms of food and the closure of one warehouse.

Food Safety Enforcement in Latina

The enforcement actions in the Latina province have targeted a wide range of health violations. Beyond the botulism and Hepatitis A risks, the NAS seized 3 tons of fruit and vegetables due to a lack of traceability, which is essential for monitoring the food supply chain and containing outbreaks.

Other regional activities have included the Estate Tranquilla 2025 (Quiet Summer 2025) campaign. Coordinated by the NAS of Rome, this initiative involved extraordinary checks at commercial and production businesses across the Pontine territory, resulting in the seizure of over 1,100kg of food.

Further targeted operations have focused on street food vendors between Sabaudia and Terracina. During six inspections of mobile kitchens, authorities seized 96 kilograms of food and issued fines totaling 8,000 euros.

Public Health Context: Botulism and Hepatitis A

The seizure of preserves at risk of botulism highlights a severe health hazard. Botulism is caused by toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which can thrive in improperly preserved, low-acid canned foods. The toxin attacks the nervous system and can lead to respiratory failure.

Public Health Context: Botulism and Hepatitis A

The seizure of 3,000 kilograms of products linked to Hepatitis A addresses a different but equally serious public health concern. Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by a virus often spread through contaminated food or water, frequently linked to poor hygiene or infected food handlers.

Broader National Trends in Food Safety

These local interventions reflect a broader national effort by the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Health to monitor high-risk food processing companies. For example, in a previous national campaign focused on Listeria contamination, the NAS inspected 1,095 companies producing animal-origin foods, such as frankfurters and dairy products.

That national campaign revealed irregularities in approximately 30% of the audited structures, leading to the seizure of 14 tons of food across Italy. Critical issues identified during those checks included the use of expired raw materials and the failure to apply essential self-control and traceability procedures.

The repeated focus on traceability—as seen in the recent seizure of 3 tons of produce in Latina—underscores its role as a primary tool for identifying and containing foodborne illness cases.
