Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing a severe domestic and international political crisis following a Pakistan-brokered two-week ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States. The deal has triggered an onslaught of criticism from across Israel’s political spectrum, with opponents describing the Prime Minister’s handling of the conflict as a strategic failure.

The ceasefire, which was negotiated without the involvement of Tel Aviv, has left the Israeli government sidelined in decisions concerning its own national security. According to reports from The Independent and The Guardian, the exclusion of Israel from the peace talks has sparked outrage among Israeli politicians who have urged the Prime Minister to continue the war.

Domestic Backlash and Political Isolation

Opposition leader Yair Lapid has branded the situation a catastrophe, asserting that there has never been such a political disaster in the country’s history. In a post on X on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Lapid stated that Israel was not present at the table when core national security decisions were made.

Lapid attributed the failure to the Prime Minister’s arrogance, negligence and lack of strategic planning, while praising the resilience of the public and the military for carrying out their assigned duties despite the leadership’s shortcomings.

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett echoed these sentiments during a live broadcast on April 8, 2026. Bennett claimed that the leadership had sold us illusions and that empty promises had exploded in our faces. He warned that Israel’s failure to meet its war objectives would leave the nation facing a vengeful Iran.

Strategic Miscalculations

Analysis indicates that the conflict has resulted in significant strategic setbacks for the Israeli government. The US intelligence community concluded that Israeli predictions regarding regime change and revolution within Iran were farcical.

Strategic Miscalculations

the Israeli assessment that the war would last only a few days or weeks proved to be inaccurate. Reports from Israel’s Channel 12 indicate that as recently as April 7, 2026, Netanyahu was pressuring US President Donald Trump to reject a ceasefire. However, Trump eventually agreed to the truce, reportedly sidelining Israel during the deliberations.

The Crisis in Lebanon

While a ceasefire is in place with Iran, Israel has continued military operations in Lebanon, leading to a growing international outcry. As of Thursday, April 9, 2026, Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed 1,700 people, including 130 children.

Western nations have insisted that Lebanon must be included in the ceasefire terms to end the violence. Meanwhile, Tehran has characterized the ongoing attacks on Lebanon as a grave violation of the ceasefire agreement.

There has never been such a political disaster in all of our history. Israel wasn’t even at the table when decisions were made concerning the core of our national security.

Yair Lapid

The combination of the fragile ceasefire with Iran and the escalating humanitarian crisis in Lebanon has left Benjamin Netanyahu increasingly isolated on both the global stage and within his own country.
