NV Energy, Nevada’s largest electric utility, announced on April 19, 2026, that it will require three times the current electricity demand to power Las Vegas by 2035 due to accelerating population growth, data center expansion, and extreme heat driven by climate change.

The projection, outlined in the utility’s 2026 Integrated Resource Plan filed with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, reflects a forecasted peak demand increase from approximately 7,000 megawatts today to over 21,000 megawatts within the next decade. Officials cited the rapid construction of hyperscale data centers supporting artificial intelligence and cloud computing as a primary driver, alongside sustained residential and commercial expansion in the Las Vegas Valley.

“We are planning for a future where Las Vegas doesn’t just grow — it transforms,” said Doug Cannon, president and CEO of NV Energy, during a press briefing in Carson City. “The scale of new load we’re seeing, particularly from technology infrastructure, is unprecedented in our history. Meeting this demand reliably and affordably will require significant investment in generation, transmission, and grid modernization.”

The utility’s plan includes adding approximately 10,000 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity, primarily solar and battery storage, to meet state mandates requiring 50% renewable electricity by 2030 and 100% carbon-free power by 2050. NV Energy also proposes upgrading over 1,200 miles of transmission lines and investing in advanced grid management systems to handle fluctuating supply, and demand.

State regulators have acknowledged the challenge but emphasized the need for cost containment. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada is currently reviewing the plan, with public hearings scheduled for June 2026. Consumer advocacy groups have raised concerns about potential rate increases, noting that residential electricity prices in Nevada have already risen 22% over the past three years due to infrastructure investments and fuel costs.

Analysts at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Center for Business and Economic Research warned that failure to adequately expand the grid could lead to rolling blackouts during peak summer months, when temperatures regularly exceed 110°F. They also noted that Nevada’s reliance on imported natural gas for peak generation poses long-term vulnerability if regional supply constraints worsen.

NV Energy serves approximately 1.4 million customers across Nevada, including nearly all of Clark County, where Las Vegas is located. The utility’s current generation mix includes about 40% natural gas, 35% solar, 15% geothermal, and 10% purchased power, with coal fully phased out as of 2023.

The utility stated that it will pursue federal funding opportunities under the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to offset some of the estimated $18 billion in infrastructure upgrades needed through 2035. Final approval of the resource plan is expected by late 2026.
