The Rotterdam police have received more than 20 tips following a renewed public appeal for information regarding the 2001 murder of 35-year-old Mariska Klompenhouwer. The surge in leads comes after a coordinated campaign involving the victim’s daughter, local authorities, and the broadcast of enhanced surveillance footage.
Mariska Klompenhouwer was killed in the early hours of April 29, 2001. Her body was discovered on a parking lot at Ahoy in Rotterdam after she had attended a karaoke evening at Café Bellevue in Rotterdam-Zuid. Investigation findings established that she had been sexually abused and run over by a vehicle.
New Evidence and Enhanced Footage
As part of the effort to solve the 25-year-old cold case, the Rotterdam cold case team utilized new technical methods to improve the quality of surveillance footage from the parking lot where Klompenhouwer is believed to have entered a vehicle. These enhanced images were featured on the television program Opsporing Verzocht
on April 28, 2026.
The police are focusing on the period immediately following her departure from Café Bellevue. Witness accounts indicate that Klompenhouwer spoke briefly with two men before leaving the venue. After failing to find a taxi, she began walking toward her home but never arrived.
Public Campaign and Reward
To raise awareness, the victim’s daughter, Veruschka, who is now 36, joined police and municipal employees on the Coolsingel in Rotterdam to distribute orange wristbands. The bands carry the message Laat vrouwen veilig thuiskomen
(Let women get home safely) and include a link to the police website for more information on the case.
The Public Prosecution Service (Openbaar Ministerie) has significantly increased the financial incentive for information that leads to the perpetrator. The reward for a golden tip
was raised from 11,000 euros to 25,000 euros.
I hope that there is someone sitting at home and thinking: I do know something. Or women who might have seen a suspicious person who spoke to them in the lead-up or afterward and now come forward with information.

Police officials stated that perpetrators of such crimes often discuss their actions with others. They noted that individuals who were unwilling to speak in 2001 may now be inclined to do so due to changed relationships, the death of the perpetrator, or a developed sense of remorse.
Despite the recent influx of over 20 tips, including those where specific names were mentioned, no arrests have been made in the case since the murder occurred 25 years ago.
