Boeing’s 737 MAX production continues to ramp up following the lifting of grounding orders,but faces ongoing scrutiny regarding quality control and delivery schedules as of January 12,2026.
Production levels
As of December 2025, Boeing was producing approximately 38 737 MAX aircraft per month, aiming to reach a rate of 42 per month in early 2026.Boeing’s Q4 2025 earnings report details these production targets. This represents a meaningful increase from the production rates prior to the grounding, but remains below pre-grounding peak levels.
Regulatory Oversight
The Federal Aviation Management (FAA) continues to maintain heightened oversight of Boeing’s manufacturing processes. The FAA issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on November 15, 2025, outlining proposed changes to Boeing’s safety management system certification process.This NPRM requires Boeing to implement more robust quality control measures and demonstrate compliance before receiving certification for new aircraft types. The FAA also conducted a six-day audit of Boeing’s 737 MAX production facility in Renton,Washington,concluding on January 8,2026,the results of which are pending public release.
Recent Quality Control Issues
In December 2025,boeing paused deliveries of some 737 MAX aircraft after discovering improperly installed fasteners on some fuselage sections. Reuters reported on December 19, 2025, that this issue affected a limited number of aircraft and was quickly addressed. This incident, however, further fueled concerns about Boeing’s quality control processes and prompted increased scrutiny from regulators and airlines. On January 10, 2026, the FAA announced it would be increasing inspections of 737 MAX aircraft already in service, focusing on fastener integrity. Airline confidence and Orders
Despite the ongoing challenges, airlines continue to express confidence in the long-term viability of the 737 MAX. United Airlines confirmed a firm order for 60 additional 737 MAX 10 aircraft on January 5, 2026. United airlines’ official news release outlines the terms of the order. Though, several airlines have publicly stated they are closely monitoring Boeing’s quality control improvements and delivery schedules before placing further orders.
