Nissan is deploying artificial intelligence across its manufacturing operations and vehicle systems to reduce production downtime and worker injuries, while advancing its push toward autonomous driving, according to reports. The automaker’s strategy centers on AI as a core component of its recovery and growth plan, following a 533.1 billion yen net loss in fiscal year 2025 and a restructuring effort that includes plant consolidations and workforce reductions.

How Nissan is Using AI in Factories

In Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi, plant, which produces the Frontier pickup and Altima sedan, AI systems monitor production in real time to identify efficiency gains and safety improvements. The technology tracks worker movements and alerts supervisors to risky postures that could lead to injuries, enabling interventions before incidents occur, according to the Clarion Ledger. “We can then talk with them and show them the proper angle to use, and that keeps them healthy,” said Chi Amaechi, a Nissan process engineer, as reported by the outlet. The program, which has already shown success, is expected to expand across the facility.

How Nissan is Using AI in Factories

Unplanned production downtime and workplace injuries are major cost drivers for manufacturers. At the Mississippi plant, which builds 400,000 vehicles annually, even short stoppages result in significant revenue losses. Nissan’s AI systems aim to mitigate these risks by predicting equipment failures through partnerships like its 2022 collaboration with Acerta, which developed a predictive maintenance tool for engine components. The company also uses cameras to monitor ergonomic risks in real time, a shift from reactive injury management to proactive prevention.

Nissan’s Broader AI Strategy

Nissan’s AI initiatives extend beyond manufacturing. In April 2025, the company unveiled a long-term vision called “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life,” targeting AI-enabled driver assistance in 90% of its vehicle lineup and autonomous driving capabilities for its Elgrand luxury minivan by fiscal year 2027. The plan includes two pillars: Nissan AI Drive, focused on self-driving technology, and Nissan AI Partner, which aims to enhance in-vehicle experiences through context-aware assistance.

Nissan’s Broader AI Strategy

The automaker has also partnered with Uber and Wayve, a London-based AI startup, to develop robotaxis for Japan. The collaboration, announced in March 2026, aims to deploy pilot vehicles in Tokyo by late 2026, operating on Uber’s network with safety drivers during the initial phase. Nissan became the first global automaker to commit to embedding Wayve’s AI directly into production vehicles, according to the Clarion Ledger.

Financial Context and Recovery Goals

Nissan’s AI investments come amid a financial recovery effort. The company reported a 533.1 billion yen net loss for fiscal year 2025, with global sales of 3.15 million units. In May 2025, Nissan announced a restructuring plan that includes reducing its vehicle model lineup from 56 to 45 and streamlining 80% of its production volume. CEO Ivan Espinosa stated during an earnings call that the company is “moving beyond recovery and entering a phase of growth,” citing progress in financial performance under the restructuring.

Nissan Advances Towards Autonomous Mobility Services by 2027

To achieve growth, Nissan aims to sell 1 million vehicles annually in the U.S. by fiscal year 2030, up from 926,000 units in 2025. The company also plans to leverage AI-driven efficiency gains in manufacturing and product differentiation to compete in a rapidly evolving automotive market. “AI-driven efficiency gains in manufacturing and AI-driven product differentiation… are the same strategic bet,” a Bloomberg report noted.

What Comes Next for Nissan’s AI Initiatives

Nissan’s AI strategy faces challenges, including the high costs of developing autonomous driving technology and the need to balance innovation with profitability. The company’s partnership with Wayve and Uber could position it as a leader in robotaxi development, but competition from tech firms and traditional automakers remains fierce. Additionally, the success of its factory AI programs will depend on scaling the technology across all production facilities while maintaining worker trust and safety.

As Nissan moves forward, its ability to integrate AI into both manufacturing and vehicle systems will be critical to its long-term viability
