The Temiskaming region of Ontario is seeing a surge in animals needing rescue and rehoming, prompting the launch of a new organization dedicated to filling the gap in services. Paws Across Timiskaming, as the new group is known, is stepping up to provide care and find new homes for cats, dogs, and even smaller creatures like rabbits and guinea pigs.
Director Julia Bigelow explained the impetus behind the organization’s formation. “We chose the name to reflect our connection to the community and our catchment area, which includes the Temiskaming district,” she said in an email interview. The need is demonstrably acute, with local shelters operating at full capacity and frequently being forced to turn animals away. This leaves vulnerable animals at risk of abandonment or unsafe living conditions.
Currently operating without a physical shelter location – though actively searching for one – Paws Across Timiskaming is relying heavily on a network of foster families. “We are incredibly grateful to the compassionate volunteers who have already opened their homes to animals in need and are recruiting more foster families to join us,” Bigelow stated. The organization provides all necessary food and supplies to foster families, offering support throughout the entire process.
The founding members of Paws Across Timiskaming aren’t newcomers to animal rescue. Bigelow emphasized that the entire board brings years of experience to the table. “They have seen firsthand how overwhelmed shelters have become. Animals are frequently turned away simply because there is nowhere for them to go.” This collective experience informs their broader goals, which extend beyond simply providing immediate shelter. They aim to address the root causes of animal surrender through responsible pet ownership education and community workshops.
Looking ahead, Paws Across Timiskaming plans to offer low-cost spay and neuter options in the area, a crucial step in controlling the pet population and reducing the number of animals in need of rescue. Bigelow also highlighted the reciprocal benefits of pet ownership, noting the meaningful mental health benefits animals can provide. “The animals need us, but we also need them.”
The organization’s launch comes at a critical time. Requests to take in animals are already coming in, even before Paws Across Timiskaming has fully established its infrastructure. This underscores the severity of the situation and the urgent need for additional resources in the region. Bigelow noted that the organization’s presence itself provides “another critical safety net” for animals facing uncertain futures.
To ensure its long-term sustainability, Paws Across Timiskaming is actively pursuing charitable status. In the short term, they are relying on fundraising efforts to cover operational costs. Currently, they are selling Little Caesar’s pizza kits and have organized an ice fishing derby scheduled for . The derby, open to anglers throughout the Temiskaming and Temagami region, carries a $50 entry fee, with the grand prize being a new ice auger. Entries will be submitted via photo.
Interested participants can register for the ice fishing derby by contacting the group through their Facebook page or via email at [email protected]. Potential foster families can find applications on the group’s Facebook page and website.
The story of Paws Across Timiskaming reflects a growing trend of community-based animal rescue organizations stepping in to address the increasing strain on traditional shelters. While the challenges are significant, the dedication of volunteers and the commitment to responsible pet ownership offer a glimmer of hope for animals in need within the Temiskaming district and beyond. The organization’s proactive approach, combining immediate rescue efforts with long-term preventative measures, positions it as a vital resource for both animals and the community it serves.
