A 1,500-foot metal fence installed along a dangerous stretch of Boulder Highway in Las Vegas has reduced pedestrian fatalities from an average of five per year to zero in that specific area.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the corridor between Nellis Boulevard and Flamingo Road has seen no pedestrian deaths in the past year. The safety project, which aimed to eliminate jaywalking by physically barring pedestrians from crossing the highway at unauthorized points, began in October 2024.

The installation of the barrier has prompted officials to expand the project to other high-risk areas of the highway.

Captain Jeff Clark of the LVMPD confirmed the effectiveness of the measure, noting that the area previously averaged five deaths annually.

Every year, we were averaging five pedestrian fatalities year over year. And I’m happy to report that in the time that we’ve had that, almost two years now, we’ve had zero, Clark said.

The fencing is designed to force pedestrians to use designated crosswalks rather than attempting to dodge vehicles or weave through traffic to find shortcuts across the highway.

Dennis Hogan, an east valley resident who has walked along Boulder Highway for more than a decade, observed the installation of the initial fencing near Flamingo and Boulder. Hogan stated that the area was probably the most jaywalked part of Boulder Highway in the entire city.

Hogan added that the barriers have definitely saved some pedestrian fatalities by stopping people from crossing in dangerous areas and requiring them to use crosswalks.

Denis Cederburg, director of the Clark County Department of Public Works, identified two primary areas with the highest incidence of accidents: the corridor between Nellis Boulevard and Flamingo Road, and a one-mile stretch near Desert Inn.

As part of a mile-long expansion project, crews were installing new fencing along Boulder Highway near Desert Inn on May 11, 2026.

The long-term plan for the safety project involves a four-mile stretch of fencing along Boulder Highway, extending from Tropicana Avenue to Sahara Avenue. Following the current work near Desert Inn, officials plan to move the project further south toward the area near Sam’s Town.
