Pedro Pascal is set to reprise his role as the masked bounty hunter Din Djarin in an upcoming Jon Favreau-directed film titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” scheduled for release in May 2026. The announcement was confirmed through a new trailer unveiled by Lucasfilm, which showcases the titular characters confronting a rising threat from Imperial warlords seeking to exploit the power vacuum left after the fall of the Galactic Empire.

The trailer, released on April 16, 2026, opens with Din Djarin and Grogu navigating a remote outer rim planet, where they encounter fragmented Imperial remnants attempting to regroup under a charismatic warlord. Pascal, speaking through his signature helmet, delivers a terse warning: “This isn’t over. They’re coming back — and they’re bringing more than just blasters.” The footage highlights intensified action sequences, including aerial dogfights between modified TIE fighters and the Razor Crest, as well as close-quarters combat featuring Din’s beskar armor and Grogu’s developing Force abilities.

Jon Favreau, who created the original “The Mandalorian” series for Disney+ and serves as director and executive producer on the film, emphasized the project’s continuity with the television series. In a statement accompanying the trailer release, Favreau noted, “This film picks up shortly after the events of Season 3, but it’s designed to stand on its own while honoring what fans have come to love. We’re expanding the story beyond the screen — both literally and narratively.”

The film marks a significant expansion of the “Mandalorian” franchise from streaming to theatrical release, reflecting Lucasfilm’s strategy to leverage the popularity of its Disney+ flagship series into broader cinematic ventures. Pascal’s return as Din Djarin ensures narrative continuity, especially following his acclaimed portrayal across three seasons of the series, which earned him critical praise and a Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television in 2023.

Grogu, affectionately known to fans as “Baby Yoda,” continues to be a central figure in the story, with the trailer suggesting further exploration of his origins and connection to the Force. While details about his lineage remain unconfirmed, the film appears to position him as a key target for the Imperial warlords, who seek to harness his potential as a weapon or symbol of renewed Sith-inspired ideology.

Industry analysts note that the May 2026 release window places the film in a competitive summer slot, following the success of recent Star Wars theatrical releases such as “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” (2025) and ahead of other major franchise entries. The decision to release in theaters rather than exclusively on Disney+ signals confidence in the property’s box-office draw, particularly among fans who have followed Din and Grogu’s journey since the series premiered in 2019.

Lucasfilm has not yet disclosed the full cast beyond Pascal, though rumors of returning characters such as Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) and Cara Dune (Gina Carano) remain unverified. The studio has also remained silent on whether the film will serve as a setup for future seasons of “The Mandalorian” on Disney+ or conclude a specific narrative arc. As of now, no official sequel or follow-up has been announced.

With production completed in late 2025 and post-production wrapping in early 2026, “The Mandalorian & Grogu” represents one of the first major theatrical Star Wars projects to emerge directly from a streaming series. Its success could influence how Lucasfilm balances its television and film strategies moving forward, potentially setting a precedent for other Disney+ properties to transition to the big screen.
