Two people died in a helicopter crash north of Wellington yesterday. They were pest control contractors working along the Transmission Gully state highway corridor, the New Zealand Transport Agency confirmed.
A preliminary inquiry of the crash site was completed today after the pilot and passenger were recovered.
Police received a report of the crash near Paekākāriki Hill around 7:30am on Wednesday, triggered by an automatic crash alert. Two fatalities were later confirmed.
Kāpiti-mana Area Commander Inspector Renée Perkins stated officers are working to identify those involved,but haven’t released names yet. “Our thoughts remain with their families and friends at this time,” she saeid.
an NZTA spokesperson told 1News the two people killed were pest control contractors working on the Transmission Gully project. “NZTA is providing support to all of those affected by the crash, and WorkSafe has been notified,” they said.
civil Aviation authority investigators have finished their initial scene examination. police are continuing their investigation, and cordons remain in place at the Battle Hill campground.
