Grammy-winning bluegrass musician Billy Strings has postponed his remaining spring tour dates after sustaining a serious leg injury in a skateboarding accident backstage following a recent performance.

The incident occurred on Saturday night, April 20, 2026, at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, after Strings completed a 29-song set. According to his own account shared on Instagram, he walked off stage just before the encore, feeling energized from the show, when he attempted a skateboard trick he had performed many times before—a back 180.

Strings described the moment of impact in his social media post, stating he heard his leg snap over the noise of the crowd. “I heard it snap over the screaming crowd,” he wrote, adding that the sound “sounded like a damn 2×4.” The fall resulted in a fracture to his left leg in two places, requiring surgical intervention with screws and plates for repair.

Medical treatment took place at the University of Virginia Medical Center, where Strings shared images from his hospital stay, including X-rays showing the hardware used to stabilize the injury. He acknowledged the pain and recovery process, referencing “the most extreme pain and crazy ketamine trips and operations stuff,” while praising the medical staff for their care.

Initially, Strings had considered continuing the tour using a mobility aid, noting that Dave Grohl had offered him the use of a similar touring chair following Grohl’s own leg injury. However, after further reflection and medical advice, he decided to prioritize healing over pushing through the pain.

“I should probably let this thing heal,” Strings wrote in his update, explaining that rescheduling was the responsible choice. Shows originally scheduled for April 22 in Charleston, West Virginia and a three-night run in Fishers, Indiana, beginning April 24, have been postponed to August 2026.

The Charleston show has been moved to August 4, 2026, while the Fishers engagements are now set for August 6 through 8, 2026. These dates fall near the end of what was initially planned as his spring tour leg.

Strings, known for his virtuosic guitar work and energetic live performances, has built a reputation as both a serious musician and an avid skateboarder—a combination he has referenced publicly in the past. This incident underscores the physical risks associated with such high-energy off-stage activities, even for experienced individuals.

As of now, there is no indication of further cancellations beyond the postponed dates. Strings has expressed intent to return to the stage once cleared by medical professionals, emphasizing the importance of proper recovery.
