President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of “nuclear terrorism” on Sunday as Ukraine marked the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster amid deadly new drone attacks.
Zelensky made the accusation in a social media post commemorating the anniversary, stating that Russia’s invasion was “again bringing the world to the brink of a man-made disaster.”
He highlighted that Russian drones regularly fly over the Chernobyl site and that one had struck its protective shelter the previous year, increasing the risk of a radioactive leak.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, attended the commemorative events and said that repairs to the damaged shelter should begin as soon as possible, noting that leaving the situation unchanged was problematic.
