Family Tragedy in Turkey: Prisoner on Day Release Kills Wife, Mother and Daughter Before Taking His Own Life

A prisoner on day release in Turkey has committed a horrific act of violence, fatally shooting his wife, mother, and daughter before turning the gun on himself. The incident, which occurred in Ankara on Monday, has sparked outrage and renewed debate surrounding the practice of allowing inmates temporary release.

The assailant, identified as Recep Cengiz, 35, was eleven days into an authorized leave from prison when the tragedy unfolded, according to reports from the Daily Mail and The Irish Sun. Cengiz had been incarcerated for fraud and armed threats.

Details emerging from Turkish media indicate the victims were Cengiz’s wife, mother, and eight-year-old daughter. The motive behind the killings remains unclear, but the incident has ignited a fierce response from women’s rights groups in Turkey.

The Women’s Solidarity Committees released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) expressing fury at the decision to grant Cengiz day release, pointing to a pattern of similar tragedies. “Last year, six women were killed by inmates who escaped prison or were out on temporary release. The justice and interior ministers said nothing and nobody was held responsible! And today, another inmate has again sowed terror,” the group wrote.

We Will Stop Femicides, another Turkish advocacy group, also condemned the murders and organized a protest in Ankara on Tuesday evening. The group’s data reveals a disturbing trend of violence against women in Turkey, with 294 women killed by men and 297 found dead under suspicious circumstances in 2025.

The incident raises serious questions about the criteria and oversight involved in granting day release to prisoners, particularly those with a history of violent offenses. While the program aims to facilitate rehabilitation and reintegration into society, this case highlights the potential risks and the devastating consequences that can occur when such releases are not carefully managed.

The Daily Mail also reported on other developing news stories, including the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie, a woman recently abducted, and updates on the legal proceedings surrounding the Alexander Brothers’ sex crimes trial. However, these stories are unrelated to the Ankara shooting.

Further investigation is needed to understand the full circumstances surrounding this tragedy and to determine whether any systemic failures contributed to the events that unfolded. The case is likely to fuel further calls for stricter regulations and increased scrutiny of the day release program in Turkey.
