Louisiana state lawmakers are considering a proposed law that would allow for the transfer of government-owned historical statues or monuments that have been removed from their original locations. According to reporting by WLOX on May 12, 2026, the proposed legislation would specifically target any historical statue or monument owned by a government entity that has been taken down.

The consideration of this law follows previous efforts to relocate Confederate monuments in the region, most notably those removed from New Orleans. In a separate action, New Orleans officials moved forward with the removal of four specific monuments from city property: statues of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard, a statue of Jefferson Davis, and a historical marker commemorating the Battle at Liberty Park.

At the time of their removal, the city of New Orleans intended to store the monuments in a city-owned warehouse until a final decision was made regarding their permanent disposition.

Previous Efforts to Relocate Monuments to Beauvoir

The potential for transferring such monuments has been a point of discussion on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Greg Stewart, the Executive Director of Beauvoir, and Ricky Dombrowski, a Gulfport City Councilman, previously collaborated on a proposal to request that New Orleans transfer the removed monuments to Beauvoir in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Beauvoir served as the final home of Jefferson Davis and is classified as private property. Stewart argued that the monuments would be better served on display than in storage.

If they truly are going to let those monuments go, the better idea is to have them on display somewhere. There’s no better place than Beauvoir,

Greg Stewart

To facilitate the request, Councilman Dombrowski engaged with fellow council members and officials in Biloxi to develop a resolution. He also indicated that he was working with Harrison County to build support for the move.

Under the proposed arrangement, Stewart suggested that the statue of Jefferson Davis would be positioned near the house at the Beauvoir site.
