Rivian has begun production of its R2 electric SUV at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, marking a significant step in the company’s strategy to expand into the mass-market electric vehicle segment.
The start of production was confirmed by Rivian on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, with the company stating that it has begun manufacturing validation units of the R2, representing the final pre-production phase before full series production.
This development comes as Rivian seeks to transition from its premium-focused vehicle lineup, which includes the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, toward more affordable models designed to increase production volume and revenue.
The R2 is positioned as Rivian’s answer to vehicles like the Tesla Model 3, aiming to deliver the company’s technology and design to a broader customer base while maintaining the brand’s distinctive identity.
According to Rivian’s announcement in March 2026, the R2 lineup will include multiple trims, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in spring 2026. The initial model available at launch is the R2 Performance with a “Launch Package,” featuring a 330-mile range, dual motors, and lifetime access to Rivian’s Autonomy+ advanced driver-assistance system.
Rivian has also indicated plans to introduce a more affordable, entry-level version of the R2 starting at approximately $45,000, though this variant is not expected to be available until late 2027. The performance model launched in 2026 carries a starting price of $58,000.
The Normal, Illinois facility has been central to Rivian’s manufacturing operations, and the R2 production line represents a shift toward volume manufacturing after years of focusing on lower-volume, high-margin vehicles. This strategy mirrors the early growth path of Tesla, which began with premium models before expanding to more accessible vehicles.
Rivian reported delivering just over 42,000 vehicles in 2025, an 18 percent decline from the previous year, underscoring the importance of the R2 launch for the company’s growth and financial stability. The expiration of the federal electric vehicle tax credit at the end of 2025’s third quarter contributed to weaker demand in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Company officials have stated that the R2 is expected to help Rivian attract more buyers, reduce per-unit production costs, and progress toward profitability in the coming years. The start of production is being closely watched by investors as a key indicator of the company’s ability to scale operations effectively.
