The Utah Jazz’s historical approach to player development and roster construction is exemplified by the career of Rudy Gobert, who demonstrated the significant impact a player can have on a game despite limited on-ball usage.

Gobert’s tenure with the Jazz spanned nine seasons, during which he evolved from a little-known Frenchman into a franchise legend and a Hall of Fame-caliber player. His journey began after a draft night trade, as the Denver Nuggets had previously traded away his draft rights.

During his rookie season, Gobert’s role was minimal, playing in 45 games and averaging fewer than 10 minutes per game. At that time, the Jazz finished at the bottom of the Western Conference, and Gobert was sent to the Bakersfield Jam of the D-League to further develop his skills.

Professional Growth and Rise to Stardom

The following season saw a marked improvement in Gobert’s production. His scoring average rose from 2.3 to 8.4 points per game, and his rebounding average increased from 3.4 to 9.5 rebounds per game. Under first-year coach Quin Snyder, Gobert played all 82 games and started 37, contributing to a 13-win improvement for the team, which moved from 25 to 38 wins.

Professional Growth and Rise to Stardom

By his third year, Gobert became a starter and nearly averaged a double-double. His breakout occurred in his fourth season, the 2016-17 campaign, where he led the league in blocks per game with 2.6. This performance earned him selections to the All-NBA Second Team and the All-Defense First Team.

This period marked a turning point for the franchise, as the Jazz won the Northwest Division and reached the playoffs for the first time in five years, recording 51 wins and advancing to the second round.

Defensive Dominance and Accolades

Gobert established himself as the league’s premier interior defender, winning three NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards. He earned his first trophy in 2018, averaging 2.5 blocks per game, and won a second in 2019. He secured his third award in 2021, tying him for the second-most Defensive Player of the Year awards in NBA history.

In addition to these awards, Gobert was named to the NBA All-Defensive team for six consecutive seasons. Only eight players in NBA history have more All-Defensive team selections than Gobert.

All-Star Status and Team Success

Despite his defensive success, Gobert faced a setback in 2019 when he was not selected for the All-Star game. Following that experience, he went on to appear in three consecutive All-Star games, making his debut in 2020. In that first appearance in Chicago, he recorded 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Gobert’s individual success mirrored the team’s stability. The Jazz reached the playoffs for six consecutive years, winning their division three times. During the 2020-21 season, the team finished with the best record in the league at 52-20, a feat attributed in large part to Gobert’s rise to stardom.

Gobert’s time with the Jazz concluded after nine seasons, following reports that he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
