Russian President Vladimir Putin presided over a scaled-down Victory Day parade in Moscow’s Red Square on May 9, 2026. The event, which commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, was notably more restrained than in previous years.
The parade took place during a period of temporary cessation of hostilities. According to CNN, the event occurred after a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine took effect. However, reporting from the Associated Press indicated that a unilateral ceasefire announced by Russia for May 8 and May 9 “quickly unraveled.”
Absence of Military Hardware
For the first time in nearly two decades, the annual celebration featured no display of heavy military hardware on the grounds of Red Square. The parade is typically characterized by a large-scale exhibition of the country’s military equipment to symbolize national strength.

In place of physical equipment, Russian authorities utilized large screens in Red Square and state media broadcasts to show pre-produced and pre-recorded videos. State media reported that these videos were filmed on the frontlines of the conflict in Ukraine.
The video presentations showcased several categories of military assets, including:
- Drone and air defense forces
- Long-range bombers
- Nuclear-capable submarines
Presidential Address and Rhetoric
During the ceremony, President Putin drew a direct parallel between the Soviet Union’s losses during World War II and the current invasion of Ukraine, which the Kremlin refers to as a “special military operation.”
The great feat of the victorious generation inspires the soldiers carrying out tasks of the special military operation today. They are standing up to an aggressive force armed and supported by the entire NATO bloc. And yet, our heroes march forward.

Regional Observances and Context
The 2026 celebrations marked the 81st anniversary of the Soviet victory. In St. Petersburg, historical reenactments took place on May 7, including a depiction of trains arriving after the end of the war at the Baltiysky railway station.
In Kyiv, Ukraine, the anniversary was also observed. On May 8 and May 9, Ukrainian army officers and citizens, including actor Volodymyr Talashko, laid flowers at monuments to pilots and the Unknown Soldier while Russian attacks continued.
The muted nature of the Moscow celebrations follows a period of intermittent diplomatic movements. Politico reported that a brief ceasefire declared in April to commemorate Orthodox Easter had previously facilitated the exchange of 175 prisoners of war between the two nations.
Security concerns and signs of domestic discontent were reported as factors casting a shadow over the annual festivities in the Russian capital.
