The New Zealand government has declined to fund SailGP’s planned return to Auckland in 2027, ending hopes for the high-profile sailing event to resume in the city’s harbour after a one-year hiatus.
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited chief executive Nick Hill confirmed the outcome in a written response, expressing disappointment while acknowledging the extensive efforts made to secure the event. “Auckland did everything to get this event across the line including resolving date issues, committing funds and meeting land and infrastructure requirements,” Hill said. “We worked incredibly hard to try and make this happen and are committed to SailGP returning to the Waitematā Harbour in future years.”
The decision followed a funding application assessed under the Major Events Fund’s Focus Area One, which requires events to deliver net national economic benefits to New Zealand, primarily through the attraction of international visitors and/or direct event delivery expenditure. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston stated that, given the timeframes involved and the information available, investment in the 2027 event was declined as it did not meet these criteria.
A previous offer of $5 million had been accepted in principle last year, contingent on reaching an agreement on dates with SailGP. However, the parties failed to finalize scheduling, leading to a higher funding request in February that was ultimately rejected by the government.
Despite the setback for 2027, the government indicated openness to future collaboration. Upston noted in her letter to Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown that the administration remains open to considering investment in the 2028 and 2029 SailGP events, and would revisit the 2027 proposal if timing allows.
SailGP’s absence from Auckland in 2027 continues a recent pattern of disruption for the series in New Zealand waters. Racing was abandoned during the Auckland event in February 2026 after a collision between the Black Foils and France teams, underscoring ongoing challenges in delivering the competition locally.
The outcome adds to broader concerns about New Zealand’s ability to host major international sailing events, following recent controversies surrounding the America’s Cup in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom. SailGP has not yet announced an alternative venue for its 2027 season opener.
