San Francisco police arrested a man on April 10, 2026, following an arson attack at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and subsequent threats to burn down the company’s corporate headquarters.
The incident began in the early hours of April 10, when an incendiary device, identified as a Molotov cocktail, was thrown at Altman’s home in the North Beach and Russian Hill area of San Francisco. According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded to a fire at the residence near Chestnut and Jones streets at approximately 4:12 a.m. PT.
The device caused a fire on an exterior gate of the property, which has been valued at $65 million. Police reported that the suspect fled the scene on foot immediately after the attack. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Arrest at OpenAI Headquarters
Approximately one hour after the attack at the residence, police responded to reports of a man threatening arson at OpenAI’s headquarters in the Mission Bay neighborhood. Officers recognized the individual as the same suspect involved in the attack at Altman’s home.

The suspect, identified as a male between 20 and 25 years old, was taken into custody at the office. Witnesses reported that multiple police vehicles remained near the 400 block of Mission Bay Boulevard until at least 9:30 a.m. PT on April 10, with the area taped off by law enforcement.
In a department-wide email, San Francisco police distributed a photo of the suspect. The image showed a young man wearing sweatpants and a light-colored hoodie, standing in front of a white SUV and holding a bottle in one hand.

OpenAI confirmed the events in a formal statement, expressing gratitude for the rapid response of the San Francisco Police Department and the support of the city in ensuring employee safety. A spokesperson for the company stated, Thankfully, no one was hurt.

At approximately 3:45am PT, an unidentified individual approached Sam’s residence and threw an incendiary device toward the property. The device landed nearby and extinguished. There were no injuries and only minimal damage was reported.
