As families prepare to gather for the Lunar New Year, health officials in South Korea are emphasizing the importance of preventative measures to curb the spread of respiratory and foodborne illnesses. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has issued guidance ahead of the holiday, recognizing that increased travel and social gatherings create conditions conducive to infection.

The KDCA’s recommendations center around basic hygiene practices, including consistent mask-wearing and frequent handwashing. These measures are particularly crucial given the ongoing risk of respiratory infections. The agency specifically highlighted the need for overseas travelers and individuals considered to be in high-risk groups to be especially vigilant in protecting their health.

To proactively manage potential importations of infectious diseases, the KDCA has designated 24 countries and regions – including the United States, China, Mexico, and Vietnam – as priority quarantine management areas. Travelers arriving in Korea from these locations are now required to submit a Q-CODE (a health questionnaire) and report their health status to quarantine officers. This system aims to quickly identify and address potential health concerns among incoming travelers.

New measures have also been implemented to facilitate early detection of respiratory illnesses. Starting January 10, 2026, free respiratory infection testing is being offered at quarantine stations in airports and seaports nationwide for travelers exhibiting symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat. This proactive testing strategy is intended to help contain the spread of infections before they become widespread.

Beyond respiratory illnesses, the KDCA is also warning of an increased risk of waterborne and foodborne infections during the holiday period. The agency notes that increased food consumption and the potential for prolonged room-temperature food storage can create favorable conditions for bacterial growth and the spread of illness. Norovirus, a common winter pathogen, is of particular concern, with cases already showing an upward trend. According to KDCA data, the fifth week of January 2026 (January 25-31) saw 709 reported cases of norovirus, nearly double the 354 cases recorded during the first week of the year.

Norovirus infections disproportionately affect young children. The KDCA reports that children aged six and under account for 45% of reported cases. This underscores the importance of careful food handling and hygiene practices, especially when preparing meals for children.

The emphasis on preventative measures extends beyond national borders. Approximately 90 North Korean defectors gathered in Seoul on Thursday, February 12, 2026, to share a traditional Lunar New Year meal. While the gathering provided a sense of community and cultural connection, it also served as a poignant reminder of the pain of separation from family members still living in North Korea. The event highlighted the emotional toll the holiday season can take on those who are unable to reunite with loved ones.

Elsewhere in Seoul, communities are also focusing on supporting vulnerable populations. In Gwangju’s Seo-gu district, local organizations are providing Lunar New Year support to those in need. Seo-gu Honors and the Gwangju Community Chest of Korea have donated 87 million won to provide assistance to neighbors facing hardship. This support includes the provision of free noodle meals at Cheonwon Guksi outlets in Kumho 1-dong and Hwajeong 1-dong, areas with a high concentration of low-income and housing-vulnerable households. A total of 400 free bowls of noodles will be served over the holiday period, alongside shared food items in community refrigerators, promoting a spirit of community sharing.

The focus on community support extends to protecting residents from financial scams. Police officers visited the gathering of North Korean defectors to provide education on preventing voice phishing and other financial schemes that often target this vulnerable population.

While the Lunar New Year is a time for celebration and family reunions, these public health initiatives serve as a critical reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and preventative measures. By adhering to recommended hygiene practices and supporting vulnerable communities, individuals can contribute to a safer and healthier holiday season.

Recent events in Seoul also underscore the importance of addressing broader safety concerns. A major fire engulfed Guryong Village in Gangnam, Seoul, on January 16, 2026, prompting discussions about fire safety and housing conditions in the area. While not directly related to infectious disease prevention, this incident highlights the need for comprehensive community safety measures.
