Shane van Gisbergen remains in a battle to qualify for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs despite securing a victory at Watkins Glen International on May 10, 2026.
The Trackhouse Racing driver currently holds 16th place in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings. However, the victory did not grant him an automatic berth in the postseason.
The lack of a win and in
provision this season means van Gisbergen must rely on his points total to maintain a position within the 16-driver playoff field.
This represents a shift from the 2025 season, during which van Gisbergen was locked into the playoffs after winning his first race of the year at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Oval Performance and Standings
While van Gisbergen has shown slight improvement in his oval results compared to the previous year, he continues to struggle in that category. He is currently 22nd in oval points, leaving him 71 points outside of the top 16.

The driver’s history on ovals has previously hindered his overall standing. During the 2025 regular season, van Gisbergen finished 25th in total points, despite winning four races on road and street courses.
Analysis of the 2025 calendar reveals that across 11 oval races held between mid-May and the end of the regular season, van Gisbergen’s highest finish was 14th. He recorded only four other top 20 results during that specific stretch.
Remaining Regular Season Schedule
The remaining regular season consists of 14 races: 12 ovals, one road course race, and one street course race.
The street course event is scheduled to be held at a new venue on Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, California. This type of racing has historically suited van Gisbergen, who won the inaugural Chicago street race in 2023.
Van Gisbergen also found success on road courses in 2025, including a win at Sonoma Raceway.
However, the 2026 schedule presents new challenges as both Mexico and Chicago are no longer on the calendar, removing venues where van Gisbergen typically excelled.
One advantage available this year is the introduction of bonus 15 points for wins, a rule that was not in place during the 2025 season.
