Shannon Health System to Acquire Scenic Mountain Medical Center, Expanding West Texas Healthcare Access
– Shannon Health System has reached an agreement to acquire Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring, Texas, from subsidiaries of Quorum Health. The move aims to preserve and expand local healthcare access within the Big Spring community.
Once finalized, Scenic Mountain Medical Center will become part of Shannon’s regional system, which currently includes three hospitals, 25 clinic locations, and more than 400 providers across West Texas. The acquisition builds upon Shannon’s existing commitment to the area, demonstrated by its 2024 purchase of the West Texas Medical Plaza, the location of Scenic Mountain Medical Group.
Shannon plans significant expansions at the West Texas Medical Plaza, increasing both primary and specialty care spaces. New services will be introduced in cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, orthopedics, general surgery, neurosurgery, nephrology, allergy, and oncology. These expansions are designed to provide Big Spring residents with a wider range of healthcare options closer to home.
Renovations are also planned for existing departments, including urology, and the creation of a new urgent care clinic for walk-in patients. The installation of new imaging and mammography equipment will further enhance diagnostic capabilities. Funding for these renovations is being provided by a generous gift from the G.C. Broughton Jr. Foundation.
“It’s an honor to take this step with the Big Spring community,” said Shane Plymell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Shannon. “This agreement allows us to expand our relationship and bring additional care and resources closer to our patients.”
Mallik Chowdary Yenigella, CEO of Scenic Mountain Medical Center, echoed this sentiment, stating that the acquisition aligns with the hospital’s mission. “Joining Shannon is a natural fit,” Yenigella said. “Their regional roots and commitment to advancing care strengthen our ability to continue serving Big Spring.”
The transaction is expected to close in the coming months, pending regulatory approvals. Until that time, there will be no changes for patients or employees, and both organizations will continue to operate independently. The agreement represents a key milestone in Shannon’s ongoing investment in improving healthcare access and services throughout the Big Spring community and West Texas.
The acquisition of Scenic Mountain Medical Center comes at a time when maintaining local healthcare access is a critical concern for many communities. By integrating Scenic Mountain into its regional system, Shannon aims to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of healthcare services in Big Spring.
Shannon’s expansion plans at the West Texas Medical Plaza are particularly noteworthy, as they address a clear need for increased specialty care options in the area. The addition of services such as cardiology, oncology, and neurosurgery will reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for specialized treatment.
The financial support from the G.C. Broughton Jr. Foundation is also a significant factor in the success of these expansion plans. The foundation’s generous gift will enable Shannon to invest in state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, further enhancing the quality of care provided to the community.
The leadership at both Shannon and Scenic Mountain Medical Center have expressed optimism about the future of the combined organization. They believe that by working together, they can create a stronger, more resilient healthcare system that will serve the needs of the Big Spring community for years to come.
