Consumers across multiple South African provinces have been warned to return bottles of 6% Slimsy Pomegranate Squash Concentrate following a product recall initiated by the National Consumer Commission (NCC). The recall, announced on , affects approximately 17,364 one-litre bottles distributed in Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.
The primary concern stems from a build-up of gas within the bottles, which poses a dual risk. According to the NCC, the pressure can cause gastric upset if the concentrate is consumed, and, more seriously, could lead to the plastic bottles rupturing or even exploding. Reports indicate that some affected bottles may appear visibly bloated, serving as a warning sign for consumers.
The affected products were sold between and , and have a best-before date of . Dynamic Brands Manufacturing (Pty) Ltd, the supplier, initiated the recall after identifying the packaging defect. The NCC is urging consumers who have purchased the concentrate to refrain from consumption and return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Prudence Moilwa, Head of Complaints and Investigations at the NCC, emphasized the importance of immediate action. “Consumers who have purchased the affected products are urged not to consume these and to immediately return the items to the point of purchase for a full refund,” she stated. Retailers have also been directed to remove all affected batches from their shelves to prevent further risk to the public.
This recall follows a similar incident involving Citro-Soda, where thousands of batches were recalled due to the presence of foreign particles.
