Sony has released the Alpha 7 V (a7 V), a full-frame mirrorless camera that integrates high-end hardware previously reserved for flagship models into its mainstream enthusiast line. The update introduces a new sensor architecture and an AI-driven processing system designed to improve readout speeds and subject tracking.

The Alpha 7 V is equipped with a 33-megapixel partially stacked Exmor RS sensor. This sensor utilizes CoW BI bonding technology, which allows for a data readout speed 4.5 times faster than that of the previous Alpha 7 IV. A partially stacked sensor accelerates the transfer of image data from the sensor to the processor, which reduces rolling shutter distortion and enables higher performance during continuous shooting.

AI Processing and Autofocus

Central to the camera’s performance is the new BIONZ XR2 processor. This chip powers an AI-driven autofocus system that provides approximately 30 percent better subject recognition compared to previous iterations. The system is capable of identifying and tracking several categories of subjects, including humans, animals, birds, insects, and vehicles.

Imaging and Video Performance

The Alpha 7 V supports blackout-free continuous shooting at 30 frames per second, with integrated AF/AE tracking to maintain focus during high-speed bursts. The sensor is also capable of capturing up to 16 stops of dynamic range.

For video production, the camera supports 4K 120p recording and full-width 4K 60p. To assist with handheld shooting, Sony has included 7.5-stop in-body image stabilization (IBIS).

Hardware Specifications and Pricing

The camera body features dual USB-C ports for connectivity and charging. For data storage, the a7 V includes dual card slots that support both CFexpress Type A and SD cards.

The Alpha 7 V is available at a price of $2,898 for the body only. Sony also offers a kit that includes the 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II lens for $3,098.
