A 17-year-old snooker prodigy’s bid to become the first teenager to win a match at the World Championship since 2005 ended in disappointment as Stan Moody suffered a 10-6 defeat to Kyren Wilson in the opening round of the 2025 Crucible tournament.

Moody, who had earned praise for his composure during qualifying, appeared visibly affected by the magnitude of the occasion as Wilson’s experience and tactical precision took hold in the latter stages of the match. The Yorkshire teenager had started brightly, winning the first two frames to take an early lead, but Wilson responded with five of the next six frames to establish a 5-3 advantage by the end of the first session.

The turning point came in the third session when Wilson compiled breaks of 74 and 82 to extend his lead to 8-4. Although Moody fought back with a 69 break in frame 13 to reduce the deficit to 8-5, he was unable to sustain the momentum. Wilson sealed victory with a composed 68 break in the 16th frame, leaving Moody needing four frames to win with only four remaining – a task made harder by the lingering pressure of the moment.

Speaking after the match, Moody acknowledged the weight of expectation had affected his performance. “I thought I started well and had my chances, but Kyren played really well when it mattered,” Moody said. “I guess the stage got to me a bit more than I expected. I’ll take the positives from qualifying and coming here, but obviously I wanted to go further.”

Wilson, a former World Championship finalist and three-time ranking event winner, praised his opponent’s potential while emphasizing his own focus on execution. “Stan’s got a brilliant future ahead of him,” Wilson said. “He showed flashes of why he’s rated so highly. But today, I stuck to my game plan, stayed patient, and made him play the difficult shots. That’s what you have to do here.”

The result means Moody joins a long list of teenagers who have failed to win a match at the Crucible since Hong Kong’s Marco Fu achieved the feat in 2003, followed by England’s Judd Trump in 2005. No player aged 18 or younger has won a match at the World Championship since Trump defeated Anthony Hamilton 10-5 in the first round that year.

Moody’s appearance at the 2025 Championship came after he secured his place through a strong showing in the World Snooker Tour’s qualifying rounds, where he defeated established professionals including Andrew Higginson and Fergal O’Brien. His run to the Crucible marked him as one of the most promising young talents in the sport, having already won the World Under-18 Snooker Championship and reached the final of the World Under-21 event.

Wilson, meanwhile, advances to face either Luca Brecel or Ashley Hugill in the second round, depending on the outcome of their first-round match. The Belgian Brecel, the 2022 World Champion, has been in inconsistent form this season but remains a dangerous opponent when at his best.

For Moody, the experience will serve as a learning opportunity as he continues his development on the professional circuit. While the result did not go as hoped, his qualification for the sport’s most prestigious tournament at such a young age underscores the rapid progress he has made since turning professional.
