Bethesda is expanding the reach and content of Starfield with a simultaneous release of a major story expansion, a substantial free update, and the game’s debut on a new console platform. Scheduled for April 7, 2026, these updates mark a significant effort to evolve the title’s gameplay systems and accessibility.

The centerpiece of this update is the Terran Armada story DLC. This expansion introduces a new hostile faction and a robotic army that operates outside the existing political structures of the Settled Systems. Unlike the previous Shattered Space expansion, Terran Armada is described as a smaller story DLC that focuses on a self-contained narrative arc and conflict rather than altering the core systems of the base game.

Terran Armada will be available for $10, though We see included for free for users who own the Premium Edition. The DLC will launch across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

The Free Lanes Update

Launching alongside the DLC is the Free Lanes update, which Bethesda has described as the biggest update since the game’s launch. This update focuses on interplanetary exploration and the introduction of several new gameplay mechanics designed to reduce friction during space travel.

The Free Lanes Update

A primary addition is a cruise mode for ships, allowing for more player downtime during cosmic trips. This system includes an autopilot feature that automatically slows the ship as it nears a destination, preventing crashes and allowing players to divert their attention to new locations.

According to details provided by lead creative producer Tim Lamb, art director Istvan Pely, and design director Emil Pagliarulo, the Free Lanes update includes:

  • A significant number of new points of interest (POIs) and locations to discover.
  • The addition of a new vehicle.
  • New weapons and a variety of space suits.
  • Seamless planetary travel and radiant space encounters.
  • Expanded progression options.

The update also emphasizes ship interaction, enabling players to decorate their vessels and engage with crewmates while in cruise mode, though these activities can be interrupted by new random encounters.

Platform Expansion and Market Reach

April 7, 2026, also marks the official launch of Starfield on the PlayStation 5. By releasing the Terran Armada DLC and the Free Lanes update simultaneously with the PS5 launch, Bethesda is positioning the game to attract a new audience with a more polished set of features and expanded content than was available at the initial launch.

This strategy follows the release of the first expansion, Shattered Space, and a series of iterative improvements made to the game since its original debut. The combination of the new console availability and the technical overhauls in Free Lanes represents a concerted effort to revitalize the title’s player base in 2026.
