A long-serving employee of the British supermarket chain Waitrose has been dismissed from his position after intervening to stop a shoplifter from stealing luxury Easter eggs at a store in south London.

Walker Smith, 54, had been employed by the retailer for 17 years. He served as a shop assistant at the Clapham Junction branch, where he was terminated following an incident involving the theft of Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs.

The incident began when a customer informed Mr. Smith that an individual had filled a bag with the chocolates. According to Mr. Smith, the shoplifter was a repeat offender. Despite store protocols that instruct employees to avoid approaching shoplifters and instead report the activity to a supervisor, Mr. Smith chose to intervene.

Mr. Smith reported that he grabbed the bag from the thief, leading to a brief struggle. During the encounter, the bag ripped, causing several Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs—which retail for £13 each—to fall to the floor. The shoplifter subsequently fled the premises.

Following the thief’s escape, Mr. Smith picked up a piece of a broken chocolate egg and threw it toward some shopping trolleys. He stated that this action was done out of frustration and was not aimed at the shoplifter.

Dismissal and Company Response

Mr. Smith was initially reprimanded by his manager and offered an apology. However, the matter was escalated, and he was called into a meeting with store managers where he was dismissed two days later.

I tried to stay strong and I didn’t say a word, but inside I was crying. They led me out the back door by the bins. I just felt demoralised.

Waitrose responded to the reports by stating that current accounts of the event do not present the full facts of the situation. The company emphasized that nothing we sell is worth risking lives for and declined to discuss the specific details of the individual case.

Employee Motivations and Context

Mr. Smith described his decision to intervene as a result of the cumulative toll of witnessing repeated thefts over several years. He told The Guardian that he had seen thefts occurring every hour of every day for the last five years, involving various individuals ranging from teenagers to drug addicts.

He expressed feeling demoralised and frustrated by the lack of effective action taken by the retailer to curb the thefts. Mr. Smith also noted that he has been diagnosed with anxiety, a condition he claims managers were aware of.

Describing Waitrose as being like my family, Mr. Smith stated that he does not consider himself a violent or aggressive person, but was driven to act by the frequency of the crimes he witnessed during his 17-year tenure.

This incident occurs during a period of rising shoplifting offences across England and Wales.
