Swiss President Supports Amendment to Arms Re-Export Ban to Ukraine
Swiss President Viola Amherd has expressed her support for amending the ban on re-exporting arms from Switzerland to Ukraine, citing concerns over the impact on the country’s industry and security.
Amherd emphasized the importance of taking a step forward for the industry, stating that a problem with the military industry also poses a security risk due to the need for technology and knowledge.
As both President and Defense Minister of Switzerland, Amherd highlighted the need for the country to invest more in European security and strengthen ties with partners, including NATO. She noted that Switzerland has underinvested in defense over the past 30 years and requires significant investment to catch up.
The ban on re-exporting arms has already led to some countries, including the Netherlands, refusing to purchase products from Switzerland due to the restrictions on re-export.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Switzerland was ranked 14th in the world among major arms suppliers in 2022. However, experts report that the country’s neutral position has led to a decline in arms sales in 2023.
