Tamil Nadu is witnessing a potential political shift as exit polls suggest a strong performance by actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the recently concluded assembly elections. While the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is projected to retain its lead, the TVK is poised to emerge as a significant force, potentially becoming a kingmaker or even challenging the established Dravidian parties.
Multiple exit polls indicate a lead for the DMK, but the TVK’s debut has introduced a new dynamic to Tamil Nadu politics. The Axis My India exit poll predicts the TVK could win between 98 and 120 seats in the 234-member assembly, bringing it close to the ruling DMK alliance, according to reporting from Republic World. This projection suggests a potential vote share of 35% for the TVK, rivaling that of the DMK.
TVK’s Potential Impact
The emergence of the TVK as a major player marks a significant change in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Previously dominated by the DMK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the state now faces a three-cornered contest. The Axis My India poll also projects the DMK-led alliance to secure 92-110 seats, and the AIADMK-BJP alliance to win 22-23 seats.

Analysts suggest that Vijay’s appeal, particularly among younger voters, is a key factor driving the TVK’s success. Data from the Axis My India survey indicates that 68% of first-time voters (aged 18-19) may have voted for the TVK. 59% of those aged 20-29 and 45% of those aged 30-39 also appear to have favored Vijay’s party, as reported by Republic World.
Echoes of the Past: MGR and NTR
The potential rise of Vijay has drawn comparisons to the late M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and N.T. Rama Rao (NTR), both of whom successfully transitioned from film stardom to political leadership in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, respectively. Aaj Tak notes that Vijay could follow a similar trajectory, potentially becoming the next influential figure in Tamil Nadu politics.
The JVC exit poll estimates the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could secure 131–150 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, while the State Progressive Alliance (SPA) is projected to win between 80 and 101 seats, with others accounting for 2–5 seats, according to reporting from The Economic Times. However, the strong showing predicted for the TVK across multiple polls suggests a more complex outcome.
Counting for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is scheduled for May 4th. The results will reveal whether the exit poll predictions hold true and whether Vijay’s TVK will indeed emerge as a significant force in the state’s political landscape.
