Ethan Dietz, a 20-year-old basketball player for Connors State College in Oklahoma, died on November 25th after suffering a head injury during a game in Texas three days earlier, on November 22nd. The sophomore forward was injured during a contest against Grayson College in Denison, Texas.

Dietz, a 6-foot-8 forward from Vilonia, Arkansas, was injured during the second half of the game when he was inadvertently hit in the head by an opposing player’s elbow while attempting a shot, according to reporting from KATV.

He initially continued playing after the injury, briefly re-entering the game despite appearing to be in pain and holding his head. He ultimately sat out the remainder of the game, placing a towel over his head. He scored six points and grabbed four rebounds before being injured.

College Cancels Games, Holds Vigil

Connors State College announced Dietz’s death on Tuesday and subsequently canceled several men’s and women’s basketball games in his remembrance. The college also held a vigil on Monday, December 1st, on its Warner campus to honor Dietz, CBS News reported.

“Ethan exemplified what it means to be a Cowboy, to value hard work and being part of a team,” the college said in a statement. “While the team and the Cowboy community are processing our own grief, our hearts go out to his family and friends.”

“Ethan was the kind of player a coach always hopes for,” said athletic director and head coach Bill Muse in a statement. “He was talented athletically and academically and he understood the importance of hard work. If you ever saw him smile, you knew he was all heart. He was a person of character as well as a great teammate.”

Dietz had emerged as a reliable scorer for Connors State, averaging 11 points across the Cowboys’ first eight games of the season. He was a former all-conference player at Vilonia High School.

The circumstances surrounding the injury and the timeline of events following the incident are under scrutiny. According to KATV, trainers checked on Dietz after the initial injury, but it is unclear whether he received medical treatment during the game itself.

Connors State cancelled its scheduled game Wednesday against Southern Arkansas University Tech, a program that had previously recruited Dietz.

Counseling services were made available to students, faculty and staff at Connors State College following Dietz’s death.
