Thailand will not participate in the League of Legends competition at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, the Thailand Esports Federation (TESF) announced on February 7. The decision, revealed in a statement published on Facebook, marks a departure from Thailand’s involvement in the event during the previous edition held in Hangzhou, China, in 2022.

The TESF cited budgetary and policy constraints as the primary reasons for withdrawing from the League of Legends tournament, which is scheduled to take place between September 19 and October 4 in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan. The federation stated that the decision was made jointly with the Sports Authority of Thailand, following a review of game titles and athlete representation for the Games.

“In order to ensure that operations are aligned with policy and with a budget appropriate to the National Sports Development Fund, the Thailand Esports Federation has jointly considered, together with the Sports Authority of Thailand, the determination of game titles and the number of athlete representatives for the selection process to participate in the 20th Asian Games,” the TESF statement read.

The decision has sparked disappointment among the Thai League of Legends community, with many fans expressing their frustration on social media. Some questioned the rationale behind the withdrawal, pointing to the active domestic scene represented by the League of Legends Thailand Series (LTS). Fans argued that participation in international events like the Esports Championships Asia in Vietnam last November and the Cross Regional tournament in April 2025 would have provided valuable preparation for the Asian Games.

The 2026 Asian Games will feature a diverse range of esports titles, including Gran Turismo 7, eFootball, and Naraka: Bladepoint on PC. Mobile esports will be represented by Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Other games on the program include Puyo Puyo Champions, Identity V, and Pokémon Unite. A new team-based fighting game event will also be introduced, featuring Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and THE KING OF FIGHTERS XV.

The inclusion of esports as a medal event at the Asian Games reflects the growing recognition of competitive gaming as a legitimate sport in the region. The Games provide a platform for Asian esports athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage. However, the Thai decision highlights the financial and logistical challenges faced by some nations in supporting their esports teams.

While South Korea has already begun preparations for its League of Legends team, Thailand’s absence raises questions about the broader impact of budgetary constraints on esports development in Southeast Asia. The decision underscores the need for sustainable funding models and supportive policies to enable countries in the region to compete effectively in the rapidly evolving esports landscape.

The TESF’s decision comes as esports continues to gain momentum globally, attracting significant investment, and viewership. The Asian Games represent a key opportunity for Asian nations to demonstrate their prowess in this burgeoning industry. Thailand’s withdrawal serves as a reminder that participation requires not only skilled players but also adequate financial and institutional support.

The lack of detailed explanation regarding the specific budgetary and policy constraints cited by the TESF leaves room for further scrutiny. Observers will be watching to see whether this decision signals a broader shift in Thailand’s approach to esports funding and development, or whether it is an isolated case driven by specific circumstances. The situation also highlights the potential for disparities in resources and opportunities within the Asian esports community.
