The global functional beverage market reached a valuation of approximately $208 billion in 2024 and is projected to more than double over the next decade, according to Zion Market Research. This growth is transforming the beverage industry as companies shift from simple hydration products to drinks formulated with bioactive components designed to provide specific health benefits.

Functional beverages are defined as non-alcoholic drinks that offer additional health benefits through the inclusion of bioactive components from plant, animal, marine, or microorganism sources. These products move beyond the removal of unhealthy ingredients to actively incorporate additives such as prebiotic fiber, adaptogens, nootropics, and protein.

Market Growth and Consumer Trends

In the United States, sales of functional beverages grew by 54 percent between 2020 and 2024, reaching $9.2 billion. This growth outpaced the overall non-alcoholic beverage market, which grew by 43 percent during the same period. Functional beverages now represent approximately 10 percent of the total U.S. Non-alcoholic beverage market.

Market Growth and Consumer Trends

The trend is largely driven by younger consumers, including Millennials and Gen Z, who are integrating these drinks into DIY wellness routines. This behavior often involves using different functional drinks for specific times of the day, such as protein coffee in the morning, fiber-infused sodas in the afternoon, and adaptogen blends at night.

Market analysts attribute this shift to a broader cultural change that accelerated during the pandemic, as consumers became more focused on proactive health management and more skeptical of traditional systems. This has led to a decline in alcohol consumption among younger demographics, who are seeking alternatives that provide social or emotional effects without the associated health downsides of alcohol.

Competitive Landscape and Corporate Strategy

The rapid expansion of the sector has attracted significant investment from legacy beverage companies and celebrity-backed brands. Major corporate moves include PepsiCo’s $2 billion acquisition of the prebiotic soda brand Poppi and the launch of Simply Pop, a gut health product by Coca-Cola. Starbucks has also increased its focus on protein-based drinks.

Celebrity influence has further mainstreamed these products. Dwayne Johnson’s ZOA Energy utilizes antioxidants and vitamins, while Kylie Jenner’s Sprinter brand offers hydration powders containing electrolytes and collagen. Snoop Dogg has also entered the market with hemp-infused beverages designed for relaxation.

Smaller brands are also finding success in the niche. Tattersall Distilling, which launched a functional line in November 2025, reported that these sales accounted for approximately 10 percent of its business less than six months after launch.

Operational and Regulatory Challenges

Despite the market’s growth, smaller companies face significant hurdles in scaling. Manufacturing requirements and regulatory certifications can act as barriers to retail distribution. Yasmin Santos, founder of Altar Native, noted that switching to a certified manufacturer for broader distribution required minimum orders ten times larger than her previous arrangement.

Regulatory uncertainty also persists regarding specific ingredients. While protein and fiber are well-established, newer additives like cannabinoids, nootropics, and adaptogens are subject to varying levels of scrutiny. Some plant-based compounds, such as kanna or kava, have encountered restrictions on certain marketplaces due to regulatory gray areas.

The industry is currently characterized by an arms race of innovation, where brands layer multiple ingredients to target various use cases, ranging from mental clarity and sleep support to improved digestion and immune system support.
