An Australian documentary has won a special award at Italy’s Trento Film Festival for its portrayal of the relationship between humanity and natural energy sources.
The film “The Road to Patagonia” by Matty Hannon received the Premio Dolomiti Energia during the 74th edition of the festival, which took place from April 24 to May 3, 2026, in Trento, Italy.
The award, presented by Dolomiti Energia, recognizes films that best interpret the vital link between natural energy and inner human energy, celebrating the synergy between people and nature through the themes of sun, water, and wind.
According to the jury’s motivation, the winning film stands out as an intense and authentic work in which the crucial balance between humans and planetary resources is interwoven with a deeply personal narrative of journey and transformation.
The documentary follows ecologist Matty Hannon on a solo adventure from the Alaskan wilderness to the southern tip of Patagonia, as he leaves behind urban life to immerse himself in the vastness of nature.
The jury, composed of Silvia Arlanch, Clara Mazzi, Chiara De Pol, and Sofia Farina, praised the film for its sensitive portrayal of the human-nature relationship and its ability to provoke deep reflection and emotional engagement in viewers.
Silvia Arlanch, President of the jury, personally presented the award and described the film as a refined docu-fiction that intertwines the delicate balance between humans and planetary resources with an intense personal journey marked by touching reflections.
She also highlighted the film’s varied and evocative cinematography, which traverses extraordinary landscapes ranging from the Amazon rainforest to Alaska, through Central America and finally to Patagonia.
The Road to Patagonia, released in 2024 and running 90 minutes, is one of fourteen special awards granted by partner associations and entities at the Trento Film Festival, awarded by independent juries.
