The Boston Red Sox secured a 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in a tightly contested game at Fenway Park on April 17, 2026, with Masataka Yoshida delivering the game-winning hit in the 10th inning.
The game remained scoreless through nine innings as both pitchers held their opponents in check. Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out seven. On the other side, Boston’s Garrett Whitlock provided a scoreless tenth inning to earn the win, retiring the side in order with one strikeout.
In the bottom of the 10th, with Jarren Duran on third base and one out, Yoshida stepped in as a pinch-hitter and singled to right field against a drawn-in, five-man infield. The hit scored Duran and gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead that held up after Whitlock’s flawless frame.
Yoshida’s hit ended the Tigers’ six-game winning streak and improved Boston’s record to 8-11 on the season. Detroit fell to 10-10 after the loss. The game lasted 2 hours and 39 minutes and drew an attendance of 34,866 at Fenway Park.
Offensively, both teams struggled to generate runs. The Tigers collected four hits, all singles, while the Red Sox managed six hits, including two doubles. Boston left seven runners on base, compared to five for Detroit. No home runs were hit by either team.
Defensively, the Red Sox benefited from strong infield play, particularly in the 10th when the Tigers brought the infield in hoping to prevent a run from scoring on a ground ball. Yoshida’s single just eluded the glove of shortstop Javier Báez and dropped safely into right field.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora praised Yoshida’s composure in the high-leverage situation. “He’s been working hard in the cage and it showed up tonight,” Cora said after the game. “To come off the bench and deliver like that in the 10th is exactly what we need.”
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch acknowledged the difficulty of losing a low-scoring game in extra innings. “We had our chances early but couldn’t cash them,” Hinch said. “Credit to them for executing when it mattered.”
The win was the Red Sox’ first in extra innings this season and snapped a two-game losing streak. For the Tigers, it marked their first loss in seven games. Both teams are scheduled to continue their series the following day at Fenway Park.
