Tournament Format and Tiebreakers
The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup features 27 clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The competition consists of five rounds: Round One, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and a single-match Final on May 30.
For the quarterfinal stage, the winner is decided by the aggregate score across two legs. If the aggregate score remains tied after both matches, the away goals rule serves as the first tiebreaker.
If the teams remain tied after applying the away goals rule, two 15-minute extra time periods will be played. During extra time, the away goals rule is no longer in effect. If a winner is still not determined, the series will be decided by a penalty shootout.
Path to the Quarterfinals
The Seattle Sounders entered the tournament with a bye in Round One after winning the 2025 Leagues Cup. In the Round of 16, they defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps FC with a 5-1 aggregate score, which included a 3-0 victory at BC Place and a 2-1 win at ONE Spokane Stadium.
Tigres UANL qualified for the tournament based on their 2024-25 Liga MX standings. Their path to the quarterfinals began with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Canada’s Forge FC in Round One. In the Round of 16, Tigres faced FC Cincinnati.
The series against FC Cincinnati saw Tigres trail 3-0 on aggregate after the first leg. However, Tigres secured a 5-1 victory in the second leg at El Volcán, with a decisive goal scored in the 98th minute by Fernando Gorriarán to win the series 5-4 on aggregate.
Club History and Stakes
Both clubs have previous success in the competition. Tigres UANL won the continental title in 2020 by defeating LAFC and reached the final four times between 2016 and 2020. Goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán and forward André-Pierre Gignac are members of the current squad who were part of that 2020 championship team.
The Seattle Sounders became the first MLS club to win the modern era of the Concacaf Champions League in 2022, defeating the Liga MX side Pumas UNAM with a 5-2 aggregate score in the final.
The stakes for the 2026 tournament extend beyond the regional title. The winner of the Concacaf Champions Cup will earn a berth in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and will also compete in the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
