The announcement, made on April 9, 2026, signals a strategic move by the organization to strengthen its driver structure amid increasing technical demands and competition within the series.
The appointment of the 29-year-old Sowery is part of a broader organizational focus on driver development. AJ Foyt Racing is currently evolving its program across both the primary INDYCAR series and various feeder racing series to build a more robust pipeline of talent.
Role and Responsibilities
In his capacity as reserve driver, Sowery is tasked with supporting the team across several critical operational areas. His primary responsibilities include contributing to testing sessions, assisting in simulator development, and supporting general race operations.
The team expects Sowery to provide experienced technical feedback to help refine the cars’ performance while maintaining full race readiness throughout the 2026 season. This ensures the team has a prepared and capable driver available should the need for a primary seat replacement arise.

Sowery joins AJ Foyt Racing with a versatile background spanning open-wheel racing and international endurance competition. He has previously competed in the INDY NXT by Firestone series, where he drove the No. 14 car.
His experience in North America’s premier open-wheel championship includes a stint in 2024 with Dale Coyne Racing. During that period, Sowery contested three races, notably securing a 13th-place finish during his debut at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Beyond INDYCAR, Sowery has established himself in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. In January 2026, he co-drove a CrowdStrike Racing by APR entry to a class victory in the LMP2 division at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. His record in the IMSA series includes two additional podium finishes across a total of 10 starts.
Team Perspectives

.
There’s a clear vision for where the team is going, and that’s something I wanted to be part of. The way A.J. Approached his career with his creativity, adaptability and always pushing forward, is something I really respect. I’ll be ready when the opportunity comes.
