Top Gun 3 is officially in development, but achieving the same level of success as Top Gun: Maverick may prove difficult, according to recent updates from industry sources.

The film was confirmed at Paramount’s presentation during CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 16, 2026, where Paramount Pictures Co-Chair Josh Greenstein announced that Top Gun 3 is “in development with a script underway,” reuniting Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

While the announcement solidifies the sequel’s status, concerns have emerged regarding the potential absence of Joseph Kosinski as director. According to a report from Puck, Paramount producers are “prepping for the likelihood” that Kosinski will not return to direct Top Gun 3 due to scheduling conflicts.

Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick, has committed to two other projects: a U.F.O. Thriller for Apple and the Miami Vice reboot for Universal. The Miami Vice reboot is scheduled for release on August 6, 2027, and its production depends on the availability of Michael B. Jordan, who is also involved in directing a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon.

Although Kosinski’s direction was not the sole reason for Top Gun: Maverick’s success, his involvement contributed to a cohesive creative vision that helped the film resonate with audiences and critics alike. The 2022 sequel grossed $1.5 billion worldwide, received six Academy Award nominations, and won the Oscar for Best Sound.

Top Gun: Maverick benefited from its release during the post-pandemic theatrical recovery, strong word-of-mouth, and its role in revitalizing a dormant franchise. Replicating that combination of timing, audience sentiment, and narrative impact presents a significant challenge for any sequel, regardless of directorial talent.

The article draws a comparison to the Avatar sequels, noting that while Avatar: The Way of Water achieved massive box office success, its follow-up, Avatar: Fire and Ash, earned nearly $1 billion less despite retaining the same director. This illustrates how difficult it can be to maintain momentum across franchise installments, even with creative continuity.

As of now, the full cast for Top Gun 3 has not been confirmed, though returning stars such as Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Monica Barbaro remain possibilities based on their roles in Top Gun: Maverick. No director has been officially attached to the project pending Kosinski’s availability.

Tom Cruise has not announced his next film after Top Gun 3 but is expected to promote Digger, an upcoming black comedy directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, later in 2026. Paramount has expressed interest in having Cruise begin work on Top Gun 3 soon, though scheduling alignment with other commitments remains uncertain.
