Toronto police are investigating an incident in which a Muslim woman was allegedly verbally and physically assaulted on a bus in Scarborough, according to the National Council of Canadian Muslims and law enforcement officials.
The incident occurred on a Durham Regional Transit bus traveling from Scarborough to Ajax on Monday, April 13, 2026, as stated by the National Council of Canadian Muslims. A video shared by the organization on social media shows a man yelling phrases including “f—ing terror” and “f— off” before allegedly kicking at the woman and moving to the front of the bus.
Another woman on the bus can be heard in the recording telling the man that he does not “get to hit girls just because we’re Muslim.” The video does not clearly show whether the kick made contact with the woman or identify the individual involved in the altercation.
Toronto police confirmed that the incident is being handled by the force’s hate crime unit. Constable Shannon Eames stated that police are aware of the event and that a report has been filed, though she could not confirm the exact time or date of the occurrence.
A spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service told CityNews that the hate crime unit is actively investigating the alleged assault, emphasizing that the matter is being treated with due seriousness given its nature and the available video evidence.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims described the event as part of a broader pattern of rising Islamophobic incidents targeting Muslim women across Ontario and Canada. The group said it remains in contact with the victim and condemned the attack as unacceptable and deeply troubling.
No suspect information has been released by authorities at this time. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to review the video and gather additional details from witnesses and transit officials.
