Trump Directs Halt to Federal Agents at Protests

President Donald Trump has directed Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to withhold federal security agents from protests and unrest occurring in several Democrat-led cities, according to a statement released today, February 1, 2026.

The directive comes after days of demonstrations in Democratic states demanding the withdrawal of federal immigration agents following shootings that resulted in the deaths of two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Trump announced that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel would not intervene in these protests.

However, the President stated that federal buildings being vandalized by protesters – whom he labeled “lunatics,” “agitators,” and “highly paid insurgents” – will be protected. He warned that Border Patrol agents would be “very forceful” in protecting federal property.

No one will be allowed to spit upon our officers, no one will be punching or kicking our vehicles, no one will be throwing rocks or bricks at our vehicles or our Patriot Warriors. If that happens, those people will suffer consequences equal or greater.

Donald Trump, President of the United States

Trump also informed local Democratic governments that the federal government would not assume responsibility for protecting their governmental buildings, stating that state and local authorities would be responsible for safeguarding those properties.

He criticized protesters for allegedly breaching a federal building in Eugene, Oregon on the night of January 30, 2026, causing significant damage and “harassing” workers, while local police reportedly did not intervene.

The move follows widespread demonstrations across the United States criticizing the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and calling for justice for Good and Pretti, who were killed by federal agents.

The President initially stated, I have instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, that under no circumstances will we participate in the protests or unrest of several poorly run Democrat cities, unless they ask for help.
